Verdara Technologies Case Study

Overview

Verdara Technologies is an oil and production company that focuses on oil extraction from hemp. We focused on creating an MVP (the most viable product) for their employees where they can enter and process data for their extraction batches through mobile and tablet applications.

Contributions

My main roles included UX Designer and researcher in a team that consisted of another UX Designer, Product Manager and Developer. I contributed to the sketching phase, created the low and high fidelity prototypes, and conducted user testing.

Process

Interview

A few of the team members visited the facility and spoke with the stakeholders about the problem. The clients were using a spreadsheet to input their information for each batch.

*I was not part of the initial group during the first week where the group attended the facility – I was asked to join afterward.

Sketching

The UX Designers separately brainstormed several different ideas based on the stakeholder’s needs. We shared and discussed our design ideas.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

The client requested the date to be auto-filled when starting a new batch creation.

We worked with the developer on adding this feature to the working high-fidelity prototype.

2nd Iteration

We had a meeting with a few of the stakeholders, and they asked us to make some changes to the low fidelity prototype. The image to the left is the second design set based on the stakeholders’ suggestions.

The client requested a start (dry) and and (wet) weight needed to be included in the data entry form.

The client requested the date to be auto-filled when starting a new batch creation.

We worked with the developer on adding this feature to the working high-fidelity prototype.

High-Fidelity Prototype

After making adjustments per the stakeholders request, we went ahead and designed the high-fidelity prototypes.

*Currently, the beta product is being used by the Verdara team.

Reflection

This was my first project working with a client on a novel product, and it was quite a learning experience. During the evaluation phase, we were unable to recruit people from Verdara Technologies due to scheduling conflicts, so we had to perform the usability test among the group. We noticed a few technical issues during testing, such as the date not being auto-filled and the data that was input for the bags not being saved. It would've been nice to recruit at least three people from Vedara Technologies to gain better insight and hear their experience about the application.

We completed the first phase of the project. The stakeholders have informed us that they could input past information and have trained their employees on the application. This project is currently ongoing.
